Jack McNally – Chairman of the Board, Founder

Jack’s vision to start a music school began in 1985 while teaching at the MacPhail Center for the Arts, then a part of the University of Minnesota. Jack is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors of MSCM while continuing to be active as a guitarist and singer/songwriter. Jack also sits on the Board of LTM, Learning Through Music, a non-profit organization dedicated to using music to change the way we teach in the public schools and the Advisory Board of Raw Toys, inspiring children and adults to see the world around them as a place full of raw materials used to solve problems. He is a member of the Seaplane Pilots Association and loves to fly his 1948 Stinson on floats. Jack is past president of the Minnesota Music Academy, a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, NARAS, known for its GRAMMY awards and a recipient of the 2000 Outstanding Musicians of the 20th Century. In 1992 he was named to the Inc. 500 as chairman of one of the fastest growing organizations in the U.S. and is listed in the Who’s Who of Executives and Professionals.

Doug Smith – Chief Artistic Officer, Founder

Doug Smith is founder and Chief Artistic Officer of McNally Smith College of Music. Doug is a classical guitarist, lutist, composer, and author of the 15-volume series Doug Smith’s Classical Guitar Method [McNally Smith College Press]. Recordings and music downloads of Doug’s compositions are available at Munificent.com. A graduate of Winona State University, Doug served as National Education Chair of the Guitar Division of the American String Teachers Association and has lectured and performed in the United States and Europe. Doug serves on the advisory board for the St. Paul Conservatory of Music.

Dr. Jeanette Daines

Jeanette DainesDr. Jeanette Daines recently retired from a staff position in the Office of the Chancellor, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. Her experience includes teaching, curriculum development, program design and development, and evaluation. In higher education, she has served as System Director for International Education and as Academic Program Director, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities; as Senior Fellow and Leadership Academy Coordinator, University of Minnesota; in various planning, research, policy development and program administration positions for the Minnesota State Board of Technical Colleges; and in teacher education and faculty development at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

James Miller

Jim Miller is the principal of James Miller Investment Realty Company, a downtown Saint Paul-based firm that specializes in brokerage, leasing, and consulting for office, industrial, and investment properties. He has a BA from Harvard College, an MBA with finance concentration from the University of Minnesota, and graduated from The Orvis Fly Fishing School in Manchester, Vermont.

Jim presently serves on several boards, including the Saint Paul Parks Conservancy; Capitol River Council, District 17 (the neighborhood organization for downtown Saint Paul); Saint Paul Rotary; and FIABCI, the International Real Estate Federation based in Paris, France.

Craig Froke

Craig Froke is a teacher. He has over 40 years of experience in education including teaching at middle school, junior high school, senior high school, technical college, community college, and university levels, as well as extensive experience in teaching courses for many companies and organizations. He has held administrative positions with the Minnesota Technical College System as the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and positions of vice president and dean at technical and community colleges in Minnesota. Throughout his career, he has served as a change agent for higher education. As System Director for Program Collaboration with Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, he led the development and implementation of a highly successful system-wide set of collaboration initiatives to improve student credit transfer in Minnesota. He is currently the president and CEO of MacKinnon, Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in improving higher education quality and student credit transfer and in establishing effective linkages between secondary education and higher education, working with colleges, universities, and higher education systems in Europe, Middle East and the United States.

Dr. Michael McPherson

Michael McPherson served as President of Macalester College for seven years before joining the Board of McNally Smith. Prior to his presidency, Michael served as a professor of economics and dean of faculty at Williams College, as well as co-founding the Economics and Philosophy journal and serving as a trustee of the College Board and the American Council on Education. He currently serves as President of the Board of Overseers of TIAA-CREF and served as a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study and a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. He holds undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate degrees from the University of Chicago, and has co-authored and edited several books on the cost of higher education and economics.

Ed Cherney

Grammy Award winning producer and engineer Ed Cherney has worked with such influential artists as Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt and Eric Clapton. Ed has a vast network of high-level contacts within the music industry, and has served as governor of the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences, as well as co-founding the GRAMMY’s Producers and Engineers Wing and the Music Engineering and Technology Alliance (METAlliance), a group of audio recording professionals.
