More than technology, it's an art.

Music technologies change and music production schools need to change with them.  The newest, flashiest music recording equipment today is tomorrow’s junk pile.  That’s why McNally Smith College of Music teaches the concepts, skills, and techniques that will serve you for a lifetime of creating and producing great music, no matter what the equipment might be.  You’ll start your music production and recording arts degree in our analog labs working with the world renowned Trident 80B console and the Otari MTR90 24 track analog recorder.  Analog labs provide visual and visceral ways of understanding audio signal flow, the basis of all music recording and mixing technologies.  From there you’ll progress to analog/digital music studios, to fully digital music studios – where you’ll get experience in 5.1 surround sound using the state of the art Digidesign Icon work surface, and take your base skills to blockbuster potential.

Inside every great music producer or recording arts engineer is the heart of a musician.  At McNally Smith College of Music we are passionate about the art of music recording and production.  We expect our recording arts and music production college graduates to excel technically and musically.  Working in small groups with experienced music instructors means you get the attention you need to thoroughly understand advanced music recording, editing, and mixing techniques.  You also study the musicianship skills – keyboard, aural, and theoretical – that are intrinsic to artistic success.

Mentoring Makes the Difference
Music production is not just about recording systems, tools, and platforms.  It’s about mentoring students in realizing their musical ideas.  We mentor you in understanding tonal quality, mood, the style of a musical work, and the different ways to capture these qualities.  Anyone can memorize tools and systems, but it’s the musically talented producer who ties it all together.
