Music Teaching Careers

A great way to share your love of music is to teach others by going into a career in music teaching and education. Music teaching careers range from working as an individual instructor in private studios to choir director to college professor and everything in between.

Examples of Music Education Careers

  • Private Instructor/Clinician
  • Musical Director
  • Band/Choir/Orchestra Director

Private Instructor – A private instructor works with students one on one or in small groups. Private instructors typically can set their own hours and fees for lessons. Lessons typically range from 30 minutes to an hour and usually take place once a week. An instructor may run his or her own studio or teach as a member of a music school or music store staff. Private instructors need the ability to market their offerings to potential students and must be able to develop lesson plans and motivate students.

Musical Director – The musical director rehearses and conducts the ensemble for the musical show or production. The musical director may also conduct auditions, sectional rehearsals and make changes or rearrangements to the score.

Band/Choir/Orchestra Director – A director is responsible for preparing the band, choir, orchestra or other ensemble to perform. This includes everything from auditioning members to selecting repertoire. If the director position is for a church, the director may also be required to attend meetings and follow a budget.
