The Bluegrass Ensemble’s traditional instrumentation includes voices and instruments such as violin, mandolin, bass, guitar, resophonic guitar, five-string banjo, and harmonica. Typically, the group performs a mixture of traditional bluegrass, handed down through oral tradition, incorporating contemporary approaches. Students stack duet and trio vocals, and push the boundaries of instrumental conventions, transforming other idioms into bluegrass. There is no drummer in the Bluegrass Ensemble, as all of the instruments become a part of the percussion.
