2010-2011 Academic Year
In addition to federal and state grant and student loan funding, students may apply for McNally Smith College of Music Scholarships. Scholarship opportunities are available for incoming and returning students. Scholarship amounts are based upon full-time attendance and will be adjusted for students who attend less than full-time.
Scholarships for undergraduates are offered in:
- Music Performance (keyboards, percussion, guitar, bass, voice, trumpet, trombone, flute, clarinet, saxophone, violin, viola, cello, upright bass)
- Production Division (music production, recording engineer, live sound, hip hop)
- Music Business
- Music Composition (songwriting and instrumental composition)
General Criteria:
- Scholarship applicants will submit one universal application for all scholarships.
- All applicants must meet the requirements of being successfully admitted to the college, including passing auditions and submitting demos, as required by the admission office for that field of study.
- Scholarships are only awarded to distinguished applicants, therefore not all scholarships are awarded each academic year.
Specific Performance, Music Business, Composition, and Production Division Scholarship Criteria:
- Results set forth on the audition evaluation (performance or recording technology).
- Academic promise as reflected in grade transcripts, SAT scores and/or ACT scores.
- Answers to essay questions and other responses to application questions.
- Verifiable financial need.
- Letters of recommendation.
- Applicant’s record of extracurricular activities.
SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION INFORMATION
These prestigious awards are granted to the applicants who:
- Exhibit exceptional abilities.
- Best demonstrate their ambition to pursue a career in music.
- Have maintained a good academic record.
- Demonstrate financial need.
Eligibity
Any student who will be attending the 2010-2011 school year at McNally Smith College of Music.
Criteria
Applicants must submit a McNally Smith College of Music online universal scholarship application, official high school/college transcripts, and two letters of reference and/or faculty recommendations.
Deadline
Applications must be completed online no later than March 1, 2010.

Acceptance
Applicants must be a McNally Smith College music student, or have applied for admission by March 1, 2010. He or she has to be accepted and sign a letter of intent by April 1, 2010.
Scholarship recipients will be expected to represent McNally Smith College in promoting music education at public and/or school-related events, perform in specific ensembles, as well as be a role model for other students.
ALL-STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
DIANA ROSS SCHOLARSHIP
The Diana Ross Scholarship is a half-tuition scholarship presented to a McNally Smith College of Music Bachelor of Music applicant every academic year.
Award
The half-tuition scholarship is applied toward a Bachelor of Music student. Renewal is automatic every semester as long as the student achieves a grade point average of 3.0 for each semester’s work and enrolls full-time for up to four years. Room and board, books, and course materials are not included.
Additional Submission Guidelines
In addition to completing an online application, applicants must also include up to 2 performance video links that equal no more than 4 minutes. Chosen selections must be in contrasting styles that demonstrate musical strengths and versatility. Accompaniment is suggested. Video links must be included in the online application. Applicants must also describe their participation in detail for each piece. Space to do so is provided on the application.
The Diana Ross Scholarship Winner
The McNally Smith College of Music Scholarship Selection Committee will review the demo submissions and will select up to five finalists from the applications submitted and present them to Diana Ross who will choose the winner.
ICE CUBE SCHOLARSHIP
The Ice Cube Scholarship is a half-tuition scholarship presented to a McNally Smith College Music Technology applicant every academic year.
Award
The half-tuition scholarship is applied toward a degree in Music Technology. Renewal is automatic as long as the student achieves a grade point average of 3.0 for each semester’s work and enrolls full-time for up to four years. Books, course materials, room and board are not included.
Additional Submission Guidelines
Applicants must also submit up to two demo recordings that they have produced, arranged, and/or recorded. The two pieces should be selected for their stylistic contrast, musical interest, and technical/creative expression. The submissions total running time should equal no more than 4 minutes. Applicants must also describe the individual participation in detail of each of the recordings. Space to do so is provided on the universal application. Applicants must submit their demos using the universal online application.
The Ice Cube Challenge
The McNally Smith College of Music Scholarship Selection Committee will select up to five finalists for the “Ice Cube Challenge.” Ice Cube will then present those finalists with a basic starting point, a beat, and hook line. The finalists will fill in the bass line, arrangement, and lyrics. They are to use this opportunity to showcase their talent/skills/creativity to develop a song. Ice Cube will review the projects and choose a winner based on what he likes best and who shows the most potential.
B-GIRL BE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarships are presented to an incoming McNally Smith College of Music female Hip Hop program application.
Award
The scholarship, a half-tuition award, is awarded for one year (two semesters). Second semester renewal is automatic as long as the student achieves a grade point average of 3.0 for each semester’s work and enrolls full-time during the academic year awarded.
Additional Submission Guidelines
Applicants may also submit an audio and/or video demo. Demos must be linked to the online application. The video and/or audio must equal no more than 4 minutes.
The B-Girl Be Scholarship Winner
The McNally Smith College of Music Scholarship Selection Committee will review the demo submissions and will select up to five finalists from the applications submitted and present them to B-Girl Be who will choose the winner.
CONCLAVE MUSIC BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP
The Conclave Music Business Scholarship is presented to a McNally Smith College Music Business applicant each academic year.
Award
The scholarship is $4000 per semester up to four semesters total. Renewal is automatic every semester as long as the student achieves a grade point average of 3.0 for each semester’s work and enrolls full-time during the academic year awarded for up to two years total.
Conclave Learning Conference
The scholarship winner will be notified in early April and will receive the award at the annual Conclave Learning Conference in July. The winner is encouraged to attend The Conclave and will receive a stipend to help cover travel and lodging expenses. The Conclave will provide complimentary tuition to attend the weekend Learning Conference.
About the Conclave
Since 1979, the non-profit Conclave — in keeping with its mission of educating the music industry — has been awarding scholarships to deserving students desiring an education in the radio and music industries.

Award

RETURNING STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
All returning second, third, and fourth year students are eligible for a scholarship award. No application is necessary as these awards are solely based on the cumulative GPA at the end of the spring semester from the previous school year. These are only awarded to students who are not already receiving a McNally Smith sponsored scholarship.
President’s Awards
These are awarded to the students with the 10 highest cumulative GPA’s at the college (generally above a 3.9 cumulative GPA). Scholarship amounts will be $3000 for the 2010-2011 school year.
Founders’ Awards
These are awarded to the students with the next 10 highest cumulative GPA’s at the college (generally above a 3.8 cumulative GPA). Scholarship amounts will be $2000 for the 2010-2011 school year.
Dean’s Awards
These are awarded to the students with the next 10 highest cumulative GPA’s at the college (generally above a 3.7 cumulative GPA). Scholarship amounts will be $1000 for the 2010-2011 school year.
PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
The Office of the President collects nominations from McNally Smith faculty, selects the winners, and determines the award amounts. There is no student application, just the faculty nomination for the award.
Award
The Presidential Scholarship is a half-tuition or full-tuition award. Renewal is automatic each semester as long as the student maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Eligible Applicants
Any student who will be attending McNally Smith College during the 2010-2011 school year may be eligible. Presidential Scholarship recipients must be nominated by a department head or division chair in consultation with interested faculty. Nominations should be submitted via the faculty nomination form to the President’s Office. This written nomination should be accompanied by a video and/or audio demo. The demo may be a web link to a performance, or a CD/DVD copy. The applicant’s authenticity must be confirmed with the demo. An interview with a candidate may suffice when deemed appropriate.
