Jazz Ensemble

The Jazz Ensemble at McNally Smith explores the essential rhythms, styles and vocabulary of Jazz music. This beginning level group plays swing feels and straight eighth note latin approaches found in simple compositions like John Coltrane’s “Equinox,” Horace Silver’s “Song for my Father,” and the Miles Davis classic “So What.” The group will perform several times throughout the semester, learn simple melodies, memorize Blues, AAB, and AABA song structures, and develop beginning improvisation concepts.
