P.O.S., a Twin Cities-based hip-hop artist, released his new CD “Never Better” on February 3rd and it quickly shot up the Billboard charts. The debut chart positions included an entry in the Billboard 200, a #1 position on the “Heatseekers” chart (for new and developing artists), and high rankings on the Rap, Indie and Internet charts. “Never Better” is on the Rhymesayers label and was engineered and mixed by Joe Mabbott at his Hideaway Studio in the Twin Cities. For Mabbott, a faculty member in McNally Smith College of Music’s engineering and production departments, “Never Better” is the second release in the past year that was recorded at his studio and quickly shot to high positions on the Billboard charts. Last May, Atmosphere’s release “When Live Gives You Lemons . . .” debuted at the #5 spot on the Billboard 200 (along with several other chart rankings). Mabbott served as engineer, mixer and percussionist for that project, which was also recorded at Hideaway Studio.
Mabbott has established The Hideaway as a studio of choice for national and international hip-hop and indie rock acts including Brother Ali, Cloud Cult, Heiruspecs, The Plastic Constellations, The Matches, several members of the Doomtree crew (including P.O.S. and McNally Smith faculty member Dessa) and many others.
Joe Mabbott joined the McNally Smith faculty in 2007. He is a graduate of The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Phoenix. In 1995 he relocated to Minneapolis and took an assistant engineer position at Trail Mix. Mabbott left Trail Mix for a two-year stint as a freelance engineer around the Twin Cities. He returned to Trail Mix in 2001 as manager and head engineer before purchasing the studio and renaming it The Hideaway in 2003. Mabbott is also a noted drummer and percussionist.Newer: Now Accepting Applications for 09-10 McNally Smith Scholarships
