Great news for McNally Smith students wanting a nice pad, a room with a view, a place to call their own, or simply just a cool place to live, eat, sleep and rehearse all in one: McNally Smith College of Music has just announced a new housing option for its growing student body. A new McNally Smith Dormitory — 34 dorm rooms that will comfortably house 100 students — is located on the 3rd and 4th floor of 345 Wabasha St. North in the historic Lowry building in downtown St. Paul. The dormitory is within two blocks of 10+ bus routes and is five blocks from campus.
The apartment-styled dormitory accommodations will be available for the fall 2010 semester, and due to the limited space, priority will be given to incoming and international students based on application date, geographic location of the student’s permanent address, and those students wishing to attend through the summer term next year. Floor-plans accommodate between 2 – 4 roommates per unit.
According to Harry Chalmiers, President of the music college, the student housing expansion reflects the continued growth of the school during the ongoing recessionary climate.
“These new housing options for McNally Smith students underscore the advances we are making not only in the academic realm of the music college but also the significant improvements in student lifestyles,” Chalmiers notes. “Despite a constricted economic environment, we continue to improve and expand the McNally Smith footprint in a prudent and profitable manner, right in the heart of downtown St. Paul.”
New Dorms offer independence and services — including a transport van
The McNally Smith Dormitory features apartment-style living at the center of downtown St Paul. Students will be able to register their preference for room-plans and number of roommates. The new housing option provides students with a perfect blend of independence and services as well as the support, security and sense of community that only a dormitory can provide:
Each floor has an upperclassman functioning as a residence advisor. Additionally, the program is supervised by a Masters Level Student Life specialist who lives on site.
A McNally Smith van provides transportation between the school and the dorm along with routinely scheduled trips to a grocery store and shopping area.
The McNally Smith Dormitory is held on two floors of an existing residential/commercial property. Only McNally Smith students, staff and property management will have access to these floors.
In addition to the apartments there is a large lounge, a separate quiet study area with public computers, ample coin-operated laundry units and a limited number of rehearsal spaces that can accommodate individual practice and quiet ensembles.
McNally Smith will have additional storage spaces available for a modest fee.
There are also numerous long-term parking options available for those students arriving with a vehicle. Bike storage will be provided for students free of charge.
Each unit comes with a kitchen and a full bathroom.
Application Process and a June 18 Deadline
All students who wish to be considered for a space in the new housing must submit an application form along with a $200.00 application fee by June 18, 2010. This fee defrays administrative costs associated with the placement process and acts as a housing deposit. This deposit will be returned within 45 days of the checkout date of the dormitories if the premises are left in the condition required by the contract. If students are not placed in the dorm due to lack of space, etc., $200.00 will be credited to their tuition account. Any student who withdraws from consideration for housing will not be reimbursed.
Upon receipt of a housing contract and application, if selected for dorm placement, students will be sent a Personal Evaluation Sheet that will help place them with a roommate. Welcome home!Newer: Kathryn Knuttila Named Miss Minnesota
