A 2009 alumni of McNally Smith was recently announced as one of 12 Community Superstars to be honored at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. W. Zachary Taylor, who earned a BA in music business from the college in 2009 and an AAS in music production in 2007, will be recognized for his volunteer work with Feed My Starving Children. The Minnesota organization was formed in 1987 and in recent years has expanded to include more than 400,000 volunteers, producing close to 100 million meals per year.
W. Zachary Taylor moved to the Twin Cities in 2006 to study at McNally Smith. While studying at the college, he began volunteering with Feed My Starving Children at the organization’s Eagan branch. Since then, he has worked in the warehouse packing meals for children in need around the world. In January 2010, after a massive earthquake struck Haiti, Taylor, along with a Feed My Starving Children team, traveled to the impoverished country to distribute meals in local villages and at food distribution centers. The team made an impact, serving 350,000 hungry people in a week’s time.
A Feed My Starving Children representative, Christine Hallenbeck, described Taylor as “an incredible advocate for [the organization]… He has used his voice, in both literal and figurative aspects, to promote FMSC to his networks in the Twin Cities and beyond.” In March of this year, following his time in Haiti, Taylor spearheaded B.Town Beyond Our Borders, a Bloomington community-sponsored MobilePack event at the Mall of America. Hallenbeck says of his efforts, “Zach worked tirelessly to create a fun, educational event for the entire community, while feeding children around the world.” The event ended up funding and packing a remarkable 250,000 meals for Feed My Starving Children.
Taylor remains active as volunteer and organizer, as well as a music director and worship leader at Atonement Lutheran Church in Bloomington. He also works full-time at Augsburg Fortress Music Publishers.
The Community Superstar Awards event will be held this Thursday, May 19, at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. The night begins with a performance of Jesus Christ Superstar followed by the distribution of the awards. For more information, visit Chanhassen Dinner Theatres’ news page. Congratulations to W.
