McNally Smith Celebrates Student Interns

McNally Smith’s latest group of student interns turned in another stellar performance representing the college’s music business, production, and performance programs. To celebrate our students and our music and entertainment industry partners, the McNally Smith Career Center hosted a reception at the House of Blues in Los Angeles.

The party was held in the elegant Parish Room where softly lit Indian textiles and antique temple screens provided the backdrop to an exciting evening. Students mingled with alumni, recording artists, publishers, venue owners, attorneys, and other entertainment industry professionals. Old friends and new friends gathered to share stories about what they’ve learned and how much they’ve grown. In the warm California evening the crowd spilled onto the patio to sip wine and sample hors d’oeuvres.

During an informal ceremony the interns presented framed certificates to their mentor organizations and expressed appreciation for their twelve week stints in artist and venue management, video and TV editing, sound production and mastering, talent development, and much more. The response from our mentor organizations was loud and clear: McNally Smith student interns shine above the rest.

The internship journey begins in the Career Center where Debbie Sandridge develops leads with McNally Smith’s industry partners. Students interview for these competitive positions and attend six coaching sessions to prepare them for professional life. Charley Brooks is the West Coast liaison for the McNally Smith Career Center. In addition to being in close contact with our business partners, she provides housing, transportation, and coaching support to our interns. Each partner organization then assigns their intern specific responsibilities and duties in multiple departments so he or she can learn all aspects of the business. McNally Smith appreciates the quality experiences our partners offer and, in turn, our partners appreciate the skills and maturity level of our student interns.

This semester the following companies provided internship opportunities to McNally Smith students: The Firm, Bug Music, Interscope Records, Alan Ett Creative Group, DMI, Pangaea Entertainment, ASCAP, Key Club, and The Urban Network.

According to Joel Cooper, interning at The Firm, “This summer has been a huge inspiration to me career wise and, more importantly, artistically. I really can’t even explain. The amount I have learned internally and the friendships I have gained have been priceless.” You can read more intern experiences on the Summer 2008 Internship Blog.

After graduation, many former interns return to Los Angeles where they land industry positions through the network of friends established during their internship. They will always have available to them the ever expanding McNally Smith alumni base and the guidance and resources provided by the Career Center.
