Singer/Songwriter Jeremy Messersmith Named 2012-13 Artist-In-Residence at McNally Smith

Prominent Twin Cities-based singer/songwriter Jeremy Messersmith has been selected to serve as the 2012-13 Artist-In-Residence at McNally Smith College of Music. Messersmith joins a long line of esteemed musicians—previous McNally Smith Artists-In-Residence include Semisonic fronman and hit songsmith Dan Wilson and Doomtree‘s Dessa.

As part of the Artist-In-Residence program, Messersmith will lead workshops and classes for students on the art of crafting songs, the business side of songwriting and creating music, and the art and practice of music performance throughout the Fall and Spring academic semesters. Messersmith is a past faculty member of the college and has been a consistent contributor to the McNally Smith Composition & Songwriting department since 2009.

McNally Smith President Harry Chalmiers recently commented on Messersmith’s appointment: “Students at McNally Smith College of Music learn from some of the most exciting, cutting-edge musicians in the country through our Artist-in-Residence Program. Artists like Jeremy Messersmith shed light on promotion strategies, recording tips, performance advice, songwriting, and more. By spending personal time with artists who are fast-rising stars or at the peak of their careers, our students gain insight into what it takes to make a life in music. In addition, students also draw inspiration from working with successful artists who have built careers doing what they love.”

Messersmith, in a recent interview, commented that it’s a two-way street, as his educational endeavors at McNally Smith have provided plenty of inspiration for the yet ascending artist. “I get a bunch of [material] from exercises that I do in my songwriting classes,” he says. “In fact, I have a song coming out on a record in the next year from one of my [McNally Smith] classes.”

When Messersmith is not at McNally Smith leading workshops, he will be embarking on his 36-date Supper Club Tour this Fall. This new, innovative touring concept will have Messersmith performing in the most intimate of settings—his fans’ houses.

About Jeremy Messersmith

Messersmith, a Twin Cities resident since 1999 has released three critically acclaimed albums, including his latest, The Reluctant Graveyard, featuring hits “A Boy, A Girl and A Graveyard,” and “Dillinger Eyes.” The record was named a Top 10 Album of 2010 by NPR and garnered him “Best Local Artist” honors from the Star Tribune’s Critics Poll. Often compared to luminaries like Brian Wilson, Simon and Garfunkel, Elliot Smith and Jeff Buckley, Messersmith’s tender and thoughtful tunes boast a devastating combination of heart-melting melodies and gut-wrenching lyrics. Paste Magazine named his Star Wars-themed video for the song “Tatooine” one of the Top 25 Videos of 2010.
