McNally Smith alums and Secret Stash Records co-founders Eric Foss and Cory Wong are featured in the latest episode of Twin Cities Public Television’s (tpt) “MN Original” — an award-winning series of mini-documentaries celebrating Minnesota’s creative community. The episode debuts on tpt (channel 2) Sunday, April 20 at 6:00PM, with an encore showing at 10:00PM — click below to watch the Secret Stash segment.
Foss (2004, Music Business) and Wong (2007, Music Performance — Guitar) established Secret Stash Records in 2009 with the express goal of re-issuing vinyl-only, groove-based music from the ‘60s and ‘70s. The label’s releases include obscure artists and compilations from Africa, Russia and Peru, as well as the more provincial “Twin Cities Funk & Soul: Lost Grooves from Minneapolis/St. Paul 1964-1979” collection.
More recently, Secret Stash has evolved into producing new artists — like Sonny Knight & The Lakers, which features Foss on drums — while maintaining a dedication to the same soulful, retro sound celebrated by the label’s eclectic catalogue. Sonny Knight and The Lakers’ debut “I’m Still Here“ will be released on Tuesday, April 29, with a record release concert at First Avenue to follow on Friday, May 3.
