Students at McNally Smith College of Music have long reaped the benefits of learning from some of the top musicians and educators in the industry. But they’re not the only ones. McNally Smith’s world-class faculty members are also key contributors to the music and arts mecca of the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota.
In an effort to highlight its faculty’s hard work and their passion for creating music, McNally Smith introduced a concert concept in 2009 called the Live at Five series. Each academic year, the school presents a handful of faculty members the opportunity to take their talent to the stage and perform for the Twin Cities community at large.
“Live at Five is just one of the many ways McNally Smith strives to strengthen the Twin Cities’ vibrant, thriving arts community,” says McNally Smith President Harry Chalmiers. “This series just keeps getting better, and our fourth season looks to be the finest to date. Folks hear me brag about the faculty we have here at McNally Smith all the time; this is their chance to come down and see—and hear—what all the noise is about.”
The 2012–13 Live at Five Series schedule is as follows:
- October 16: Jay Fuchs (Composer/Entertainer) w/ special guests Erin Schwab, Lee Fuchs, the Dan Musselman Trio, Valeri Lari, the Faculty Vocal Quartet, (Charlie Christenson, Jennifer Parker, Rachel Holder, Shon Parker) and more…
- November 27: Eva Beneke (Classical Guitar)
- February 5: Toki Wright (Hip-Hop)
- March 26: Sean Turner (Jazz)
All Live at Five events are free and open to the public. Each concert begins with a 5 p.m. reception in the McNally Smith Atrium, featuring free appetizers and performances by student ensembles. Wine and beer are available for purchase, with all proceeds benefiting Gillette Children’s Hospital and Instruments In The Cloud—an online effort to get musical instruments into the hands of music students in public schools. At 6 p.m., the featured faculty member will take the stage in the McNally Smith Auditorium.
