McNally Smith College of Music is excited to announce the addition of Adam Meckler to its Brass and Woodwinds faculty. An accomplished and in-demand trumpet player, Meckler has toured extensively with internationally renowned artists — including riot jazz/hip-hop troupe Youngblood Brass Band and Todd Clouser’s jazz/art rock trio A Love Electric. He is also a fixture in the Twin Cities music scene, performing with The Jana Nyberg Group (vocal jazz), the Jack Brass Band (traditional New Orleans jazz), The Graydon Peterson Quartet (modern jazz), Lulu’s Playground (experimental), The Brass Barn Polka Band (polka), The Good The Bad The Funky (funk and soul), and Pete Whitman’s X-Tet — a ten-piece jazz ensemble comprised of all-star Twin Cities musicians.
“Adam Meckler is a first-call trumpet player,” says Whitman, who heads McNally Smith’s Brass and Woodwinds department. “He’s best known for his strong jazz chops, but he excels in all contemporary musical contexts. He’s also a fiercely innovative composer/bandleader and a passionate educator who is known for maximizing the talents of his players and pupils. Our students will benefit greatly by studying with such a versatile and engaging artist.”
Meckler holds a B.M. in Jazz Studies from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisc., and a M.M. in Trumpet Performance from the University of Minnesota. An active educator, he also teaches at MacPhail Center for Music, maintains a trumpet studio in the Twin Cities, and leads clinics and workshops all over the country. He is a 2014 recipient of MacPhail’s Artist Development Grant and is in the process of using the funding to release a full-length album of original compositions from his latest project, the Adam Meckler Orchestra — an 18 piece jazz ensemble that plays all original music written and arranged by Meckler. He is also one of three founders of SoKillingMan.com — a site dedicated to transcription and analysis of jazz solos.
