Winter Jazz Blast 2016


McNally Smith College of Music’s 4th Annual Winter Jazz Blast Evening Concert features a performance from the JazzMN Orchestra with renowned saxophone player Kenni Holmen, as well as sets from the acclaimed McNally Smith Fusion Ensemble and Serbian Ensemble. This concert concludes a day-long non-competitive festival for high school jazz bands, featuring workshops, performances and clinics. Several outstanding high school student soloists will be invited to perform with JazzMN Orchestra at the evening concert.

About Kenni Holmen

Kenni Holmen is one of the most active recording and touring musicians from the Twin Cities area. He has performed and recorded with many local, national and international artists over his thirty-five year career, including Michael Bolton, Celine Dion, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, T.C. Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Donny Osmond, The Rev. Billy Graham Crusade, Doc Severinson, Garrison Keilor, Reba McEntire, The Minnesota Orchestra and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra just to name a few.

Holmen has recorded with Janet Jackson, Rod Stewart, Prince, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Ben Sidran, Mandy Moore, The Jonas Bros. and many others. In addition to recording album projects and jingles, Holmen has performed with New Age artist Lorie Line. This includes a performance at The White House in the fall of 2000. Holmen was voted “Best Tenor Sax Player”by Twin Cities Reader magazine. He is also featured with Prince’s horn section, The Horn Heads, who have toured throughout the United States, Europe, and South America since 1992.

The JazzMN Orchestra, the Twin Cities’ premier professional jazz orchestra, performs a broad range of jazz repertoire spanning classic and contemporary styles, showcasing outstanding jazz musicians from throughout the region and featuring world-class guest artists. Now in its 16th season, the JazzMN Orchestra has featured international jazz artists such as Bob Mintzer, Nicholas Payton, Rob McConnell, Gordon Goodwin, Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Phil Woods, James Moody, and Dave Weckl. JazzMN’s educational outreach program allows local school students the opportunity to learn from — and then play alongside — JazzMN musicians in concert.
